Fibroids

Fibroids are very common in the black race.
They are usually found in women in the 20’s and above.
They never develop for the first time after menopause.
They are more common in the body of the uterus or womb and are they many in number.
They are grouped according to the position of the uterus where they occur.
They can grow to very large size, pushing the womb or uterus forwards, backwards or to the side, depending on the position.
They are non-cancerous

Cause of Fibroid
Fibroids seem to occur as result of an abnormal response to female hormone oestrogen.
They shrink and disappear after menopause but grow quickly during pregnancy.

Symptoms
Large fibroids can cause problems with urination, backache and constipation.
The commonest problem is increased and prolonged menstrual loss.
Severe anaemia may result from the prolonged menstrual loss.

Signs
Large fibroids are usually painless, firm and diagnosed by ultrasound.

Treatment
Small fibroids do not usually require treatment.
Large ones are removed by surgery.

How does a woman feel after a missed abortion?

Usually after the D @ C or evacuation, healing starts.
She may feel weakness, decreased libido, and some degree of depression.
Plenty of rest is required to allow her body get back to normal after the hormonal changes of pregnancy.
If there is decreased libido due to anxiety or tension, she should relax and enjoy sex and not worry about fear of another abortion.

Some studies have shown that one out of four of every pregnancy gets aborted.

A missed abortion may be nature’s way of getting rid of something that most likely would not result in a normal delivery.
There is often no reason for the occurrence of a missed abortion, even though it may occur sometimes for genetic reasons.

Conception and a successful pregnancy outcome is possible after a missed abortion.

What is Missed Abortion?

Missed abortion occurs when the foetus or baby dies but it is retained with the other products of conception in the uterus
The uterus is usually small for the gestation period and does not increase in size between successive antenatal visits.
Often a false pregnancy test is the case.
However a negative pregnancy test is helpful.
An ultrasound examination is more helpful.

Missed Abortion

A young friend of mine got married a few months back. Luckily, she got pregnant immediately. Their joy knew no bounds and she excitedly looked forward to motherhood.
However, her joy was short-lived, when about three months into her pregnancy, she noticed slight bleeding early one morning. This stopped later in the day then began the following day.
She sought medical attention. Examination and investigation indicated a missed abortion. In addition, a fibroid was found growing on her uterus.

She was devastated. With good medical care and healing time, she is trying to put that behind her and move on with her life and marriage, hopeful that the giver of the fruit of the womb will bless them again.
Of course she wanted to know the causes of missed abortion and fibroid. These will be discussed subsequently.
I shall be grateful for any comments on these topics.

1. Missed abortion.
2. Fibroid.

Cheers and God bless!
